I've got a Linux desktop running Xubuntu 24.10. I use x11vnc to access it on my local network. I've got about 50 Pis running Buster and x11vnc and probably that many NUCs on Xubuntu 15.10 or 16.04 also running x11vnc. I use the RealVNC client since it is free for everything. I've also have a free RealVNC Lite account that gives me 3 non-commercial servers that can reach beyond the local network with ease. I use those on Pis but they would work just as well on a Linux desktop. I also have a 1 server commercial account with RealVNC that I use occasionally for work.
