In a properly configured encrypted rootfs, the initramfs code will prompt for the encrypted rootfs password. If you're not getting prompted, then either your /etc/crypttab in the initramfs is missing or incorrect, or you've got something else borked in your initramfs.Sorry, I don't understand your question :/Was the initramfs getting as far as asking for a passphrase by itself, or is that still a separate problem?
While booting the rpi, no passphrase is asked, the system try to reach or mount the volume and finally I land in the initramfs shell.
Here's a suggestion for you that will help you figure out what's going on, and should take you less than 30 minutes to get to a fully-functional reference system:
- Burn and Boot up a standard RasPiOS system. Lite will be just fine (smaller disk footprint, so takes less time)
- Download and run sdm-cryptconfig on that system as documented in https://github.com/gitbls/sdm/blob/mast ... ryption.md, which you've already found
- Go through the complete rootfs encryption process
- Once that completes and you're running on an encrypted rootfs you'll have a perfect reference system for sorting out the missing steps on your systemd-less system
