The fan was close to silent initially, but now is quite noisy. It sounds like the fans are rubbing against something.
It looks like I can take it apart, I just wondered if it might be because I have the Pi mounted vertically that the fan is not very happy?

It's possible, although sleeve bearing fans are typically happier mounted vertically, and fluid-dynamic and ball-bearing fans don't generally care much about orientation. Does it quieten down if you tip it slightly back from vertical?

It has been noisy for three or four days now, making me decide it is time to think about it.
Embarrassingly it hadn't crossed my mind to put it horizontal again to test that

It is a bit of a palaver as it is behind something and screwed in. However, I decided it made sense to test that.
So, went to shut it down and suddenly it is back to the quiet level it was on day one.
Rebooted it, still quiet.

Thank you for your influence. That told it didn't it?
