The 50mA GPIO combined current limit was previously mentioned in this thread. If I remember correctly it's actually 50mA for sinking and another 50mA for sourcing current through the pins. So you could get a total of 100mA of current for the LEDs while staying within the limitations.
Of course there's many more reasonable ways to accomplish driving the LEDs, with some options already detailed in the previous replies. I've used the ULN2003, but that's no good if you're driving from 3.3v. There's NMOS versions of it though that would be suitable. (ULN2003LV)
