It is really as simple as in the referred post of RonR. At the end of that post, you’ll see the usb-boot utility. Get it and run it, using the proper names of your sd-card and your SSD-drive, like in the examples of RonR’s post.
I had precisely your set-up and used USB-boot several times over ssh, always resulting in successful booting from the USB-drive (or NVMe-SSD drive),. Of course you must set the right boot order via raspi-config (SSD boot first)
