I really hope your instructors have given full advice and consideration to the dangers involved in mucking about with mains voltages.
Not just the risk to the equipment but to life and limb too.
Frankly, I'd go back and ask them to change the project to something not involving mains.
But that's just me.
if you go ahead you might need more than just wires to the button inputs. You may need to read and act on limit switches and emergency stop button(s) too.
