The ability to do both depends on the right chipset and settings and then breaks for various reasons plus is slow as in most cases the chip has to flop back and forth. I found the only reliable solution is a USB WiFi adaptor. Dedicate one WiFi for the AP and use the other for anything else. I use the USB WiFi for the AP as it is MIMO with an excellent range.
Use routing to connect your Internet to your local WAN. If you want all in one with firewall and other stuff, I see lots of posts about Pihole. It "does everything". I could not get it to make decent Pizza.
I had the dual setup working perfectly before Bookworm and Network Manager. Today I am testing the same setup using Bookworm and nmcli.
