Beginners • Re: Learning Linux

Hello,

I'm new to the raspberry pi world. I bought a raspberry pi 5 several months ago and have been running the raspberry pi 5 OS on it so far. However, as I learn more and more about Linux, I'd like to install an operating system on my pi 5 that doesn't come with so many things pre-installed. I'm guessing that learning is done best when you install/configure things yourself. What operating systems are best for someone like me who's trying to learn more about how linux works? I tried installing arch linux for arm on my pi and hit a roadblock at a blank screen during boot. I don't think arch supports raspberry pi 5 yet.

Thanks in advance!

An interesting approach.

Many posters in these forums express frustration that they just want to USE their Raspberry Pi system and actively object to having to learn anything about Linux to do so.

So I'd say that as generalisation RasPiOS is a linux distribution that has evolved to be 'easy to use' both by beginners and by those with some technical knowledge or interest.

If you want something more 'bare bones' and needing some effort to implement you might want to look at alternatives such as piCore (aka Tiny Core Linux) http://tinycorelinux.net/5.x/armv6/releases/README or DietPi https://dietpi.com/. (No checks done by me to see if there are RPi[5]-compatible releases of either.)

{Edit: see see -> to see }
I'm really interested in learning more about how it works, so effort to implement is kinda what I'm looking for I guess :). Thanks for the links
