You wouldn't see it, the drive is a virtual interface, the computer can't see what actually happens on the physical device.Really? In 30-ish years of using NTFS, I've never seen any evidence of a HDD doing anything with it beyond what the OS tells it to do. Drive firmware is quite small, e.g. around 1.6MB for an IronWolf 525 or 2MB for a Firecuda 530. What leads you to believe that some HDDs parse NTFS structure, and what benefit would it provide?
1.6MB of firmware is massive for something that doesn't have a multimedia interface, there is nothing functionally complex in operating the hardware of a HDD.
I can't find any mention from drive manufactures any longer, perhaps it was a fad that died out. However some HDD firmware malware does exist that would be pointless if it was not operating at file level.
