HATs and other add-ons • Re: A case for rethinking Pi5 cooling

The Pimoroni setup photo is uploaded by a user on the Pimoroni NVMe Base product page, so I cannot estimate how hot it gets. I suspect that it might get really REALLY hot, since on the unsupported M2 list there are certain disk models that have been found to run HOT. Personally, I haven't switched to NVMe yet because I had decent USB3.0 storage already available. Speed is lower than NVMe but much better than SD cards (~ 300MB/s) and TRIM is fully supported. In any case, if baseboards or HATs are involved, I would definitely go for a side blowing fan. If that is not an option and you want to try a diy solution, having adequate standoff distance between the baseboard and the Pi (with a longer ribbon cable if necessary) with a heatsink mounted on the M2 might do the trick. In that kind of setup, the Active Cooler's centrifugal blower could come in handy and be super quiet, provided there is some way that the Pi would be aware of the SSD temp.
